The competition was won by a company named Heneghan Peng from Dublin, Ireland which won the prize money of 250,000 dollars. The building was further handled to Heneghan Peng Architects, Buro Happold, and Arup combining to design.   

The building is shaped as a chamfered triangle in the plan that sits on a site two kilometres west of the pyramids. The museum's main features are the translucent stone wall, made of alabaster at the front to the façade of the building. The total estimated project cost is US$550m, US$300m, which will be financed by the Supreme Council of Antiquities as well as from Japanese loans and other international funds.
